Three Reasons Your “Why” Isn’t Enough 0

By now you’ve probably seen Simon Sinek’s Ted Talk about the power of Why. (If you haven’t, watch it here.)

The point Sinek makes is that people are interested in your “Why” – the idea that impels you. It’s way more compelling than just what you do and how you do it. If people can be inspired by your Why, they’re more likely to follow you, purchase from you, and support you. As Sinek points out, Martin Luther King, Jr., rallied the civil rights movement by stating, “I have a dream;” not, “I have a plan.”

Step one of the Speak From Your Soul Solution is “Spirit” – your Why. What is your Why? What dream inspires you?

Is it “I want all the girls in the developing world to go to school so they can take their rightful place in their countries’ economies and governments”?

Is it “I want internet shopping to be a more communal experience in order to maintain a sense of neighborhood”?

Or is it “I want people to learn to be unplugged from their devices more often so they can tune in to their higher selves”?

Those are all really good causes, and they might work well in connecting with others through your website, teleseminars or business cards.

But they’re not enough.

Why not? Here are three reasons:

1. They’re just actionable steps that come from your real Why.
2. They only hint at what you really believe – but either can’t or won’t articulate.
3. Your real Why is so awesome and powerful that it scares you to really say it.

I often talk about a heart-centered speaker being spiritually grounded. And here’s where that groundedness comes in. You have to know what you really believe about reality in order to share an inspiring vision with others. It’s the Why behind the Why that you need to be clear on.

So, if you want all the girls in the developing world to go to school, it might be because you absolutely believe that the divine masculine and feminine must be expressed in a balanced way.

If you want internet shopping to be a more communal experience, it might be because you absolutely believe in one unbroken web of life that joins everyone on the planet.

And if you want people to be unplugged from their devices so they can tune in to their higher selves, it might be because you absolutely believe that the only way mankind can save the planet is by learning to listen for higher guidance.

You don’t necessarily state this all the time, but you need to know it.

For instance, my tag line is “heal the world with your message.” It works for a short snippet on my website and business cards, but the real Why goes way beyond that.

I believe the world we experience is the outcome of our individual and collective thinking. Kind of like a spiritual barometer. If our thinking is honest, unselfish, and spiritual, our experience is good. And if our thinking is calculated, selfish, and limited, our experience is not so good. So the more we share our honest and heartfelt stories, the world we all experience will have to improve and heal. And it takes everyone who’s got that kind of message to share it, in order to counter the unhelpful, dishonest, and just plain bad messages that are out there polluting our experience.

That’s why I do what I do – and why I try to help you “heal the world with your message.”

So take some time to consider your really big Why. What is it that you absolutely believe that informs the Why you share with others?
